Many comparison lists center on drafting because a generated reply is easy to demonstrate. That does not make drafting the only email problem worth comparing.

But look at what is being optimized. A drafting assistant lowers the effort required to compose or summarize email. That is a real job — an older McKinsey analysis, summarized by Harvard Business Review, estimated that professionals spent about 28% of the workweek on email, roughly 2.6 hours a day. The estimate predates the current AI market and is context, not a benchmark for any tool below.

Drafting speed and inbox volume are separate outcomes. Faster composition can reduce handling time, but a product page that promises faster replies does not by itself show that fewer messages arrive or that total email time falls.

Superhuman Mail (now part of Grammarly)

Superhuman documents a keyboard-first client, split inbox, AI drafting, and thread summaries. Grammarly acquired Superhuman in 2025. The current suite page includes Mail from the Business tier at $33 per user per month billed annually, or $40 monthly, while Superhuman's help center still documents a standalone Mail Starter plan at $30 monthly or $300 annually. Because those official surfaces do not fully agree, check the checkout path that applies to you. Its documented fit is a keyboard-heavy drafting workflow; we did not test its speed or polish.

Shortwave

Shortwave documents AI search across Gmail history, summaries, and drafting. Plans run Business at $30, Premier at $45, and Max at $120 per seat per month, with a 14-day free trial. Its support page says it requires a Gmail or Google Workspace account and does not support Microsoft 365 or Exchange. Its documentary fit is an AI-heavy Google-account workflow; we did not compare model quality or value per dollar.

Fyxer

Fyxer positions itself as an AI executive assistant for Gmail or Outlook: its site says it sorts incoming mail, prepares replies in your voice, and produces meeting notes. Pricing is Starter at $30 per user per month ($22.50 billed annually) and Professional at $50 ($37.50 annually), with a 7-day free trial. Its documentary fit spans writing and organization; we did not verify sorting accuracy or draft quality hands-on.

Gemini in Gmail

Since January 15, 2025, Google includes Gemini AI features in eligible Workspace Business and Enterprise plans without a separate AI add-on; Business Standard lists at $14 per user per month with a one-year commitment. Google documents drafting, summaries, and inbox Q&A inside Gmail. For an eligible existing Workspace customer, this is a bundled option against which a separate subscription can be compared.

Microsoft Copilot in Outlook

Microsoft documents Copilot drafting, thread summaries, and tone coaching inside Outlook. Microsoft 365 Copilot Business lists at $21 per user per month with annual commitment, with an $18 promotional price through September 30, 2026; monthly commitment is $25.20. Its documentary fit is an Outlook-centered suite workflow; this review did not compare its drafts with the other writers.

Which AI email tools focus on sorting or bounded triage?

For this comparison, a "finisher" means the published workflow filters arrivals, clears existing mail, or gives a triage session an explicit endpoint. It does not mean we measured long-term inbox volume.

SaneBox — filtering and deferral

SaneBox is not a client or primarily a drafting tool. It describes a filtering service that moves lower-priority mail into deferred folders. Its official pricing lists monthly plans at $9.49 for one account, $15.99 for two, and $42.99 for four, with lower effective rates on longer commitments. Its documented benefit is attention filtering; deferred mail remains available for later review, so this is sorting rather than removal.

Bulk cleaners — the one-time purge

Tools like Clean Email, Unroll.me, and their many siblings document workflows that scan a mailbox, group subscriptions, and let you mass-archive or send unsubscribe requests. The structural limit: a purge handles existing mail; only honored opt-outs, filters, and changed signup habits affect future arrivals.

Flick — the finisher (disclosure: we make it)

Flick is our swipe-to-triage email client on the web and iPhone. The current US App Store listing, checked August 3, 2026, markets Gmail in its main description and lists version 1.0.9. Older release-history copy mentions iCloud, Yahoo, and IMAP connections, but we did not run current provider smokes, so this comparison does not market those connections as currently verified.

First, the private-pilot target is bounded: selected messages are presented as cards, decisions remain tied to a named account and snapshot, and a finish must state scan limits, failures, and exclusions rather than represent that a mailbox is empty.

Second, on supported cards Flick exposes a separate Unsubscribe control and confirmation, then parses advertised List-Unsubscribe routes. It can use an RFC 8058 POST signal when List-Unsubscribe-Post is present, but it does not independently verify DKIM coverage, endpoint safety, or sender honor. The public Exit Gap work list currently contains 150 senders, but it is not an honor-grade lookup yet: as of August 3, 2026, only four senders have capability-only observations and none has a published honor grade. Capability shows that an exit route was observed; honor requires burner-mailbox follow-up, and the stated grading method requires at least three probes spanning 48 hours.

Flick also offers requested AI reply drafts, so the writer/finisher split is not absolute. The workflow saves an approved reply as a draft for the user to review. The current build does not expose or invoke Gmail Send, although the authorized gmail.modify scope is technically broad enough to send. Does drafting AI actually reduce time spent on email?

Microsoft has published preliminary evidence that Copilot reduced email interaction in its study population, but that result does not establish the effect of every drafting assistant.

Microsoft's 2024 Work Trend Index reports preliminary results from a six-month randomized field study of 3,000 people at 60 Copilot customers: Copilot users read 11% fewer individual emails and spent 4% less time interacting with email. This is vendor-published evidence from participating customers, not a population-wide estimate or a head-to-head test of the tools above.

Provider rules target the arrival side of the problem. Google requires senders of more than 5,000 messages a day to personal Gmail accounts to support one-click unsubscribe on covered marketing/subscribed mail and process those requests within two days, using the RFC 8058 List-Unsubscribe-Post standard. Yahoo publishes its own sender requirements and recommendations and should be evaluated separately rather than assigned Google's numeric threshold.

The sources support two different interventions: drafting and summarization may reduce handling time, while an honored unsubscribe request can reduce future subscription mail. The evidence reviewed here does not justify calling either mechanism universally more effective.

How should you choose an AI email assistant?

Rules, not vibes:

1. Name the bottleneck. If composition takes most of the measured time, compare drafting tools. If repeated message decisions dominate, compare sorting or bounded triage workflows; drafting alone may not address that job. Our three-decision triage system is a manual triage option.
2. Check the bundled baseline. Eligible Workspace and Microsoft 365 plans may already include writing features. Compare a separate subscription with the capability already in your specific plan.
